The influence of differential effects of refraction and absorption in the earth's atmosphere on solar brightness measurements is studied numerically. It is shown that these effects produce a 160-min wave with an amplitude comparable to that found in observations. The necessity of excluding diurnal harmonics in the determination of solar oscillation periods is demonstrated.
