An analysis is made of Spitzbergen data obtained during 1981-1982 at 4278, 5577, and 6300 A. It is shown that the auroral-pulsation zone is associated with precipitation variations near magnetospheric closed field lines at the equatorial part of the oval, while the red auroral zone (the zone of soft precipitations) lies at the near-polar part of the oval, i.e., at the bouondary of closed and open field lines. The mechanism responsible for quasi-regular pulsations of background glow in auroras and of Pc3 pulsations is associated with magnetospheric closed field lines.
