The results of the first detailed TEM examination of the Semarkona and Bishunpur ordinary chondrites support the conclusion that they have experienced in situ hydrous alteration which has not gone to completion. The alteration was accompanied by the redistribution of elements such as Ca, Ni, and Zn. The ultimate product of the alteration, even of the sulfides, was smectite with an unusually Fe-rich composition. The mineral assemblages resulting from hydrous alteration are used to estimate the conditions that prevailed at this stage in the meteorites' evolution. Maximum temperatures were almost certainly less than 260 C and possibly much lower. The equilibrium gas phase compositions were dominated by H2O and H2 and were not solar.
