The Mars Global Surveyor has produced excellent magnetic field observations of the planet. These observations have been used by a number of scientists to determine the direction of magnetization of isolated magnetic anomalies. The magnetization direction can then be used to determine the location of a Virtual Martian Magnetic Pole (VMMP), which assumes that the magnetic anomaly was caused by a field equivalent to a central dipole in Mars (equivalent to a Virtual Geomagnetic Pole, or VGP, for Earth), produced in the Martian core in the early part of Martian history. These VMMPs do not group very well and the average pole is not close to the Martian spin axis. Investigation of the crustal field of Mars using spherical harmonics reveals a pattern that suggests the field is controlled by what was once an axial dipole field. These results will be discussed in terms of variables such as magnetization age, reversals and polar wandering.
