The descent of ballistic type vehicles into the rarefied atmosphere of
Mars is examined in terms of the effect of aerodynamic loads on the
frontal surface of vehicles. It is shown that a soft landing is feasible
only under the following conditions: presence of autonomous navigation
aids on-board the vehicle, and a small lift-to-drag ratio.
