Recent observations indicated that auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) is mainly emitted in cold plasma-depleted regions on the right-handed X mode. In this paper, the spontaneous emission of the X mode is calculated and entered as a source term in the linear transfer equation of this mode. The solution of this equation yields the spectral intensity due to amplified spontaneous emission at distance R from the source. It is shown that the maser synchrotron instability mechanism can account for the observed AKR intensities, although it requires the presence of nonthermal features at 13-20 keV in the electronic distribution. The study has shown that no nonlinear effect occurs for the generation of most of the AKR events, while the saturation level due to a trapping-type mechanism corresponds very well to the maximum observed AKR spectral intensities.
