Arguments are presented in support of the hypothesis (based on Venera 9 and 10 data) that electron fluxes are the main source of ionization responsible for the upper maximum of electron density in the nightside ionosphere of Venus. A previous hypothesis that the main source of the nightside ionization is the transfer of O(+) ions from the daytime ionosphere is analyzed and found to be unconvincing.
