In 1978 the RT-70 radio telescope was successfully commissioned in Yevpatoriya, U.S.S.R. During the course of the design work progress in the geometrical optics method for synthesis of a dual-reflector system with specified characteristics was stimulated. The synthesis theory used in the design of the RT-70 differs from well-known approaches by the strictness of the task statement and the solution generality. In the design process, complex problems arose due to diffraction phenomena in the dual-reflector commutator, the reflector size of which does not exceed 4-5 wavelengths in the decimetric-wave range. To solve these problems, special diffraction shields had to be applied to the reflectors. Another problem the designers encountered was the problem of phase compensation of the reflector system due to gravitational deformation. This problem was successfully solved, and results of investigations of the phase compensation system's performance efficiency are given.
