Magnetogram inversion technique data and data from direct measurement in the solar wind are used to analyze a number of magnetospheric substorms and to suggest a new scenario for such events. The scenario includes the three known models as well as strong positive feedback in the primary generator circuit. A part of the substorm active phase is identified where the principal role in the energetics is played by the feedback mechanism and the the external generator. After the external generator is switched off during the second active phase, the internal energy source plays the main role.
