The magnetic properties of an ironband formed in Mesozoic sands and clay are given. X-ray, DTA, Mössbauer and magnetic analysis revealed that the main magnetic carrier is goethite, of which the crystallinity changes within the ironcrust due to the isomorphous substitution of Fe by Mn. Artificial Mn-substituted goethites, never previously reported, can be synthesized and their properties compared to the natural ones. The possibilities of using the chemical remanent magnetization of the ironcrust as a `marker', to gain insight into its genesis, age and accretion velocity, are examined.
