Recently Nidever, Majewski, and Burton have used the Leiden-Argentine-Bonn all-sky HI survey to make a thorough study of the Magellanic Stream. In distinction to previous work, they now find that all of the stream and much of the leading arm originates in an Overdensity Region that includes the very luminous emission nebula 30 Doradus. Outstanding remaining questions: 1)Why doesn't the Magellanic stream have stars? and 2) Are magnetic fields responsible for maintaining the stream's strongly periodic spatial and velocity patterns?
The Dual Proposal[1] can provide answers. Here the photon has a real mass and the graviton an imaginary one, both masses given by mc2=hc/λo = 10-25 eV, where λo = 400 pc. The resulting sinusoidal gravitational potential (φ = - (GM/r) Cos[kor], ko=2π/λo) has a unique feature: maxima of potential where gas can stall and create stars. The massive photon generalizes Maxwell's stress tensor by adding terms in the vector potential A (Chibisov 1976). For scales greater than 400 pc, even weak B-fields can have a strong influence on the plasma within the stream. Finally the new universal scale λo may, someday, relate gravitation to atomic physics. By equating inertial and gravitational energy densities, one finds a numerical relationship: c4ko2/2πG = 13.6 eV/(137ao)3, where ao is the Bohr radius.
