Earth Magnetosphere: Bow Shock, Earth Magnetosphere: Interplanetary Magnetic Field

Scientific paper

The low frequency hydromagnetic waves in front of the Earth's bow shock are generated by interaction between the solar wind and its reflected ions in the bow shock. According to the electromagnetic ion beam instability, the relationship between the low frequency hydromagnetic waves and the interplanetary magnetic field are studied theoretically. The formulae are obtained for both resonant mode and non resonant mode respectively. The results show that the low frequency hydromagnetic waves in front of bow shock are the source of low latitude Pc3 pulsations.
