Calendars, Mars (Planet), Month, Nomenclatures
Scientific paper
Various possible calendars for use on Mars are presented and compared. The number of months, days and weeks per month, weeks per year, intercalation sequences, reference to the Roman calendar, and accuracies of the calendars are displayed in tables. A Martian calendar is proposed incorporating a seven day week with an integral number of weeks per months enabling each month to begin on the first day of the week, a year which begins on the vernal equinox, and the simplest possible intercalation sequence. The proposed calendar has an accuracy of the order of one day in 20,000 Martian years, a computer program which produces maps and correlates Martian and earth calendars, and a nomenclature which prevents confusion between earth and Martian systems.
