The characteristics of the light curve of SN 1987 A are found to be suitably reproduced over a 100-day period, with invocation of neither radioactive Ni-56 or newborn pulsar feeding, by a semianalytical SN lightcurve model extending the Arnett (1987) scheme to include the effect of H, He, and heavy element recombination in the expanding ejecta. The model inputs are the physical parameters of Sanduleak -69 202 and a composition derived from SN models. Similarities with the features of an exploding WR star are noted to hold only for early times.
