Partial correction of atmospheric seeing by adaptive optics can yield significant improvements in image quality. This affects not only direct imaging but also post-detection correction techniques such as short exposure peak tracking and speckle imaging. In this paper we use numerical simulations to investigate the relative merits of wavefront tilt and/or piston correction for the six 1.83 m subapertures of the Multiple Mirror Telescope (MMT) under near-infrared seeing conditions. These simulations are used to predict the performance of a recently installed adaptive mirror at the MMT. Further enhancement in image quality results from the application of peak tracking short exposures. The resulting images are characterized by their Strehl ratios and also by a new parameter which more accurately quantifies the diffraction-limited performance. This work is supported by the NSF through grant AST 92-03336.
