It is shown that when there is complete magnetic calm in the dark sector, so that both kp and the local K-indices are zero, the dipole (dp) latitude of auroral activity is above 74°. However, when even a very weak magnetic disturbance occurs, causing the local K to rise to the value 1 (even if Kp is still zero), the midnight auroral dp latitude abruptly decreases nearly to 67.5°, that of the statistical auroral zone. Characteristics of the aurora in the above two conditions are, however, different in several ways.
