We present the KOSMA large-scale observations of clouds in the Galactic Molecular Ring (GMR) in CO J=3-2, 2-1 and 13CO 2-1 following up on the BU-FCRAO 13CO 1-0 survey. The GMR is one of the most prominent large scale structures in the Milky Way and an interesting laboratory to study star formation. The combination of observations of these lines thus allows to distinguish between extended, quiescent gas, dense cold parts, and warm regions, influenced by star formation. Such large scale observations also allow to analyse the structure of the material.
