The mission of Pioneer 10 (launched March 1972) and Pioneer 11 (launched April 1973) was to explore the interplanetary region beyond the orbit of Mars, to investigate the nature of the asteroid belt, and to obtain new information about Jupiter. Factors affecting initial picture distortion are identified. The image processing programs are discussed as to geometrical rectification of resultant distorted pictures, cosmetic improvement, enhancement, and various color display techniques. Also discussed is the Pioneer image converter system for real-time imaging, which provided a real-time picture to the program operators, who could thus monitor the quality of the image data as they were being received, and first-look photographs for the news media.
