A review is presented of Josephson effects, which sets out sufficient theoretical background to allow readers with no previous knowledge of superconductivity to understand the basic physics of the effects. Attention is given to quantum interference, time-dependent effects for the shunted-junction model, and tunnel junction phenomena. A number of applications of Josephson effects involving quantum interference (the dc and the RF SQUIDs, and computer elements) and ac effects (microwave, mixing, parametric amplification) are discussed.
