A C 30 alkane has been isolated from a Nigerian crude oil by elution chromatography, thermal diffusion, adduction with urea and thiourea and preparative gas-liquid chromatography. The combined information from analytical gas-liquid chromatography, mass spectroscopy and proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy, strongly suggests that the isolated alkane is squalane (2,6,10,15,19,23-hexamethyltetracosane).
