The internal dynamics and expected brightness distributions of a class of extended extragalactic radio source models have been calculated, using time-dependent numerical hydrodynamics. The class of models considered are those which employ energy input from a compact region embedded in the radio source. If the compact region produces only the minimum amount of high-energy material needed to power the radio source, it is found that, contrary to observations, the source appears limb-brightened in the direction normal to its major axis, and no 'hot spots' are produced. However, if in addition, the compact region produces a large amount of cooler plasma, general agreement with observations is obtained without excessive depolarization. Encounters with external inhomogeneities are also calculated, with similar results. The application to black holes, spinars, and relativistic beams is discussed.
