The European Very Large Telescope (VLT) will consist of an array of four 8-m telescopes, plus two additional 2-m-class auxiliary telescopes. The two latter telescopes are fully dedicated to optical (IR and visible) interferometry, with possible combination of some or all large telescopes. This paper discusses the implementation of the VLT interferometric mode concept, which was described earlier by Lena (1987).
