It is shown that an equatorial anomaly exists in the electron content of the topside ionosphere such that the electron content during the early afternoon is greater at latitudes north and south of the magnetic equator than at the equator itself. The diurnal variations of the topside, sub-peak and total electron contents above Singapore, where the magnetic dip is 17°S, indicate that the increase in total electron content which occurs between noon and 16.00 L.M.T. is due entirely to an increase in the topside content during that period.
