The effect of the initial period of a pulsar on its age determination is examined. It is found that for the majority of pulsars the initial period of their rotation is close to the observed period; in addition, the characteristic age of these pulsars does not reflect the true age, but is considerably greater than it and characterizes the rate of losses of stellar rotational energy. A correlation between the magnetic field and rotation period of neutron stars is found.
