It is shown that X-ray spectra of bursting neutron stars are significantly different from the black-body spectrum due to the effect of Thomson scattering in their photospheres. The shape of the spectra depends on the mass of the neutron star, on the radius, temperature and element abundances of the photosphere, as well as on the burster's luminosity. The authors suggest a method to determine these parameters by comparison of the X-ray burst spectra with the theoretical spectrum of an isothermal scattering atmosphere (with allowance for the general relativity effects and the possibility that peak luminosity is close to the Eddington value). Application of this method to analysis of some bursts of MXB 1728-34 and 1730-33 led to positive results.
