Magnetic fields were found to play an important role in many catclysmic variables. The effects of a magnetic field on nova outbursts are examined. It is found that magnetic field strenghts above a certain limit can inhibit novas explosions. This can explain why active novae are absent among AM Her objects, while novae can be found among intermediate polars.
