Our approximate model calculations substantiate the idea that the most important factor in the attenuation of the ozone layer may be the aerosol contamination of the upper atmospheric layers. For instance, a 10-percent decrease of the ozone volume concentration recorded in the main ozone layer may be caused by an increase of about 0.003 or 0.03 in the optical thickness of the purely scattering stratospheric aerosol when the particle radius r is 0.05 μm or 0.10 μm, respectively.
