It is proven that there is a substantial equivalence between the Hubble law for the expansion of the universe and the law of universal gravitation in the framework of Newtonian mechanics. In particular it is found that in the case of a reference system with the origin in the center of gravity of a galaxy and in translational motion with respect to the inertial reference, the force of entrainment is opposite to the gravitational force that the universe exerts on the galaxy.
