The properties of the hot ionizied medium along the line of sight to SN 1987A are constrained using an X-ray image of the field surrounding the supernova. It is suggested that an absorption feature in the optical spectrum of SN 1987A at 6379.7 A may be forbidden Fe X (6375 A), suggesting a very high iron abundance either in the hot interstellar medium of the LMC, or in coronal gas between the LMC and the Galaxy.
