A brief historical outline of the study of the magnetopause and magnetopause regions is presented. Mention is made of the Chapman-Ferraro theory, the free boundary problem for determining the location and shape of the magnetopause, magnetic merging, scale of the magnetopause, and the connection between Kelvin-Helmholtz instability and magnetic pulsations.
