The design of a spaceborne X-ray telescope with spatial resolution less than 30 arc sec HEW, and effective area 10,000 sqcm at 2 keV; 5 000 sqcm at 8 keV is discussed. Optical design studies indicate that for ideal telescopes the spatial resolution can be met. The effective area is achieved with 5, 7, and 12 telescope modules for conical, Wolter-1, and Kirkpatrick-Baez designs, respectively. The production, assembly, and alignment techniques were reviewed. The use of 7 Wolter-1 telescopes, each with a focal length of 8 m and an aperture diameter of 70 cm is recommended. The Kirkpatrick-Baez design was not accepted because at least 12 telescope modules would be required. The conical design was rejected because it would not meet the spatial resolution requirement. The Wolter-1 telescopes have to be manufactured by replication techniques, similar to those used for EXOSAT. For the X-ray Spectroscopy Mission these techniques require appreciable further development, particularly for the production of the lightweight Wolter-1 replica optics.
