The design and development of the two identical high resolution visible cameras intended for the SPOT mission are described in light of the mission objectives of remote-sensing data-base collection, side-view data acquisition, stereoscopic imaging and multimission platform qualification. Radiometric and geometric specifications of the instruments are presented and the current state of system development is discussed. Attention is given to the performance and design of the CCD detector and the Schmidt telescope, and the trellis design and thermal control of the instrument structure, as well as detection box and electronics designs and instrument calibration. Component models planned in the next phase of instrument development are indicated, and encouraging preliminary test results are noted.
