Results of 15 months observations of the ionospheric electron content made at Kiruna, Sweden are presented. Observations were made using the 40 and 41 MHz beacon of the S-66 satellite. Most of the night-time observations, except for the summer period, show a distinct trough in the electron content. Seasonal and diurnal variations of the trough and of the electron content are studied. Also the corresponding equivalent slab thickness obtained using [latin small letter f with hook]0F2 data from six Scandinavian ionosondes and geomagnetic control of the trough are investigated. Some features of the diurnal variation of electron content during the summer agree with the hypothesis of ionospheric heating by photoelectrons from the sunlit magnetic conjugate ionosphere.
