Long-slit spectroscopic observations are used to explore the kinematics, spatial distribution, and ionization mechanisms of the gaseous nebulosity of NGC 1068. It is shown that the velocity field can be modeled by a single rotating disk, and that velocity irregularities superimposed on this general pattern may be associated with the high-excitation gas north-east of the nucleus. The Ne-V phase is found to have a much larger scale height than the H-II region component. Simlarities are noted between the high-excitation Ne-V phase and the hot O VI component of the Galactic interstellar medium.
