The fractal approach to the hierarchical clustering of matter in the Universe is presented. It is compared with the properties and results of models which assume the continuous clustering of cosmic matter. The problem of mean density of this matter is discussed. Formulas for the mean density of hierarchically clustered matter are compared with the formulas obtained from fractal models of clustering.
