Using a sample of 327 ALFALFA galaxies resolved by the Arecibo beam and spread across 2,300 square degrees of sky, we examined the distribution of HI diameters. To do this, we developed a method of modeling the effective beam pattern present in the ALFALFA data and used a CLEAN-like deconvolution routine in order to remove the sidelobes. We find that the distribution of HI diameters roughly follows what is expected from the HI mass function and the bulk HI properties of galaxies. We also combined measurements from all galaxies in our sample to investigate the extended HI environment and found that the typical galaxy resides in large halo of low density gas. We discuss our results both in terms of connecting damped Lymanα systems with galaxies and their implications on theories of galaxy formation.
