HeliNet is a project funded by the European Union within the Fifth Framework Programme of R&TD, and deals with the development of a network of stratospheric platforms targeting traffic monitoring, remote sensing, communications, and localization applications. In this paper we give a survey of the project activities in the field of remote sensing. In particular, we focus on the development of a technological demonstrator of an on-board optical payload for the HeliNet platforms, based on commercial hardware, and aiming at assessing the key issues in imaging applications from stratospheric platforms. In particular, we first describe the proposed demonstrator architecture and hardware; then, we provide an overview of the image processing algorithms foreseen to be run onboard the platforms, as well as at the ground segment.
