The HEGRA array is a ground-based detector for the observation of extended air showers (EAS). The main aim of the experiment is the search of ultra-high energy (UHE) cosmic gamma sources. Results from the 100 million events collected since August 1989 are presented. The detector is undergoing a huge upgrade program to lower the energy detection threshold and to improve substantially the - gamma to hadron (γ/h) discrimination ratio.
