A knowledge of the Grüneisen parameter is essential for the determination of many basic physical relationships important in the study of the Earth. These include the equation of state for solids and liquids, the adiabatic gradient and the melting curve for the Earth's interior, the thermodynamic properties of the mantle and core, and the Hugoniot curve (the shock wave adiabat). We present theoretical results for the determination of the Grüneisen parameter γ(ρ) and analyse the approximate methods used for its determination. The results of these determinations give γ(ρ) in the pressure range from 0 to 100 Mbar.
