If you've come across the feeling from your physics students that the scientific methods that you are teaching are applicable only in a teaching laboratory, try this case study on them. It is a modern application of these methods: • series expansions and asymptotic behaviour of complicated functions; • simple straight line fits to data; • dimensional analysis; • an experimental scientific law is explained as an approximation to a more complicated theoretical law; • simple statistics improve accuracy; • interpretation of difficult spatial geometry; • scientific imagination interprets data; • a scientific law is tested to its limits.
