Exclusive processes open windows into the structure of hadrons, in which form factors are the first and most developed observables. I will review some history in the evolution of the subject, and trace the flow of ideas about what form factors tell us. There is a grand road from ideas such as VMD to the role of quarks, and it is a road charged with lively debate. The physics is interesting in every kinematic regime, from the lowest to the highest momentum transfers, and with every new probe. New ideas about the proton's two electromagnetic form factors, and their relation to other observables will be presented: there is a case to be made that the comparison of the form factors with other exclusive measurements has the power to substantially revise ideas about the nucleon accepted for more than 40 years.
