For the sake of simplicity, the lithosphere is considered to be a homogeneous elastic spherical shell, and the stress equations for the base of the lithosphere are taken as boundary conditions. Stress equations are obtained for use in the computation of the lithosphere stress field with the satellite gravitational coefficients, and the 5 x 5-deg global stress field in the lithosphere is computed from harmonics of degree 2-30. Principal stress directions in this stress field are found to agree with the principal stress directions implied by midplate earthquake mechanisms, in situ stress measurements, and sensitive geological features, indicating that the drag forces exerted on the base of the lithosphere by gravitational mantle convection may be among the driving forces of plate motion and a major source for the lithospheric stress field.
