Scientific paper

A large X-ray flare occurred on August 1, 2010. This flare generated substantial changes in the ionospheric electron density distribution. To view the global ionospheric response, numerous data sets have been combined using the Texas Reconfigurable Ionosphere Plasmasphere Logarithmic Data Assimilator (TRIPL-DA). TRIPL-DA uses the Three Dimensional Variational (3D VAR) data assimilation technique to reconstruct the ionospheric and plasmaspheric electron density distribution from available electron content and electron density observations. This paper will present ionospheric weather maps before, during and after the August 1st X-ray flare. The comparison of these weather maps will help illuminate the ionosphere’s global response to this X-ray flare.
