The German extraterrestrial basic research program comprises projects of astronomy/astrophysics and solar terrestrial relations, with the subareas of aeronomy (physics of the upper atmosphere), magnetospheric and plasma physics as well as planetary and cometary physics. The objective of the program is the continuous promotion of space science in Germany through a national program, through participation in the ESA space science program and in bilateral projects as well as support of in-house initiatives of the research institutes.
