The radiative properties of a large absorbing sphere predicted by the geometrical optics approach are compared with those of a large finite sphere evaluated according to Mie's electromagnetic scattering theory. The results obtained for the albedo and asymmetry factor are depicted as contour maps in the relative complex refractive index plane. The maximum relative differences between the extinction efficiency factors obtained from the geometrical optics approach and Mie's theory are presented as functions of the size parameter. Quantitative measures giving the validating region of the geometrical optics approximation are proposed for the size parameter and the imaginary part of the relative complex refractive index.
