Both theoretical and observational studies have demonstrated that elliptical galaxies can form through the merger of spirals. However, if most ellipticals formed in this way, new globular clusters must be formed during mergers. This is required to reconcile the merger hypothesis with the higher specific frequency of globular clusters around ellipticals relative to spirals. We have previously proposed that the formation of new globular clusters is a natural outcome of the merger process. Ground-based data provide some evidence for the existence of young globulars in mergers, but do not have sufficient resolution to distinguish globulars from more extended star formation regions. Results from the two relevant galaxies which have been imaged by the WFPC1 demonstrate the promise of space-based resolution, but are somewhat limited by the broad wings of the psf. Therefore, we propose to obtain images with the WFPC2 of a sample of four merging systems, carefully chosen from our ground-based survey to represent a range of merging states. Since the formation of new globular clusters is required if ellipticals are the products of spiral mergers, this program is a very economical way to test the merger hypothesis.
