Shortly after the announcement of the first useful photographic processes in 1839, the first photograph of the Moon was secured. This paper discusses some of the photographs of the Moon taken during the period 1840- 1864 and gives information on the processes which were used. The stereoscopic effect and the physical reasons which made stereoscopic lunar photographs possible are discussed, and some biographical material is given for two early workers in this field, Warren de la Rue and Lewis M. Rutherfurd.
