The field dependence of the magnetic anisotropy of rock samples has been studied using a new computer-controlled automatic torque magnetometer. To illustrate the technique and interpretation, a variety of rocks has been measured which contain sheet silicates, haematite and/or negligible amounts of magnetite. Some of the samples with predominating sheet silicate minerals present magnetic phenomena which apparently cannot be explained by the usually applied simplifying theoretical models. To solve this problem the hypothesis is introduced that field-induced magnetic coupling (metamagnetism) occurs at higher fields in the paramagnetic sheet silicates well above their p reviously reported Néel temperature.
