The philosophical basis of physics and the motivation of physicists is discussed in terms of an attempt to understand the structure of the physical world. The underlying questions which are beyond the power of physics to answer, such as 'why is the universe intelligible?', and 'why is mathematics so useful in describing the nature of the physical world?' are discussed. The interpretation of reality in terms of physical science and in theological terms is examined and the author describes his search for understanding and truth in a complete world-view with insights from both science and religious belief and experience.
