Results are summarized of a study on the faint object camera, the ESA contribution to the NASA 2.4 m space telescope program. The camera is optimized for the imagery of faint objects and galaxies in the ultraviolet and visible regions of the spectrum. It will be able to detect objects of 28th visual magnitude in a ten-hour exposure and will have a spatial resolution of 0.1 arc second. The camera contains an optical relay to magnify the telescope focal plane, a set of filters, and an imaging detector system working in the photon counting mode. Four detector options were considered: I(4) system, electrostatic system C-I-EBS, I(2) system, and MCP system. Configuration and design aspects are surveyed.
